Highland Oaxaca, 300–100 BC

Overall, the population of highland Oaxaca grew from 90,000 (500–300 BC) to 108,000 (300–100 BC). But often, lumping disparate things together masks very different forces and outcomes. In this case no region in highland Oaxaca grew at the steady pace that the aggregate numbers imply, and each had a different trajectory, tumultuous in Coixtlahuaca and the Central Mixteca Alta but more orderly in the Valley of Oaxaca (Figure 5.1).
